Description: There is great potential to use anaerobic digestion systems to generate renewable energy from livestock operations in the United States. In 2010, the AgSTAR program estimated that biogas recovery systems at these facilities have the potential to collectively generate more than 13 million megawatt-hours (MWh) per year and displace about 1,670 megawatts (MW) of fossil fuel-fired generation. Recent and evolving improvements in anaerobic digestion technologies and project approaches increase the feasibility of building anaerobic digestion systems to serve farm- and community-scale needs. This map presents state and county level data for the number of livestock operations and the number of animals for cattle, chickens, and hogs. The data are compiled from the USDA 2007 Census of Agriculture.
